#TeamKuwait Are 10 …

I was really amazed on how Twitter and blogs all focused yesterday on Faye and forgot that Team Kuwait consists of 10 athletes that represent us all in the olympics. This is not the first time Kuwait had female representation in the olympics as Dana Al-Nasrallah competed in the women’s 100 m back in Athens 2004. Even MP Aseel Al-Awathi fell in this mistake in her Twitter yesterday when she mentioned Faye, then Maryam when she was told about her. At the end mentioned the whole team.

Yes Faye is the first swimmer and for some extra info Maryam is the first female shooter to represent Kuwait at the olympics. My concern here is Kuwait doesn’t have an issue with female sports. It has issues when it comes to sports overall.

Recently Mohammed Al-Azmi was fired from his job. See sports in Kuwait is a hobby not a profession. Unlike other countries athletes train all year long and dedicate themselves to the sport they like. With the help of their national unions and professional coaches they progress in sports as a job. Where as in Kuwait we have bad sport facilities, bad training and of course the fight over who gets the union/committee.

We will be proud to see any of the athletes from Kuwait to bring us one of those medals. If not, we will know they have tried their best even when they had issues with their unions and sport in general in Kuwait.

Well said , what’s even more shocking is those that complained for the million blog posts. The Olympics aren’t an everyday event. They are an event that make us feel proud of where we are from and proud of those that represent us, and quite rightly too.

Loved this post. Thanks for speaking out.

This year’s olympics is more interesting to us because it’s in London, Manchester, and other places we know very well.

I haven’t watched an opening ceremony of any Olympics since the ’84 one. Since then, London was the only other Olympics’ I’ve watched.

I’m saying all this to point out that it’s not because of Fay that we’re so interested in this year’s Olympics. It’s because

    - It’s taken place in a country we love.
    - It’s because, up until a two weeks ago, we were banned from it.
    - And it’s also because we’ve got twitter to interact with this time.

It just seems that Kuwait is more interested because fay is competing, but that is just not true. Fay makes it seem like that because, unlike the other athletes, she’s interacting via twitter and with the other international athletes there; thus making herself more interesting to us.

It’s just so easy to get excited when we see her pic with Phillips.

All said, we do wish all our athletes the best of luck, and wish they come back with lots of medals.

London has nothing to do with it. I watched every single opening because I love the olympics not the country it is hosted in. It doesn’t seem, look at all the blog posts, all the tweets and you will see that other players are neglected. Even Aseel Alawathy did this mistake and she was then told by many people on Twitter that she should not be taking sides.

Yes she interacts and that is something good. Fheid Al-Dahani has Twitter but I do not see anyone mentioning him ??

IF we are Kuwaitis, we will not care who is representing us. We should cheer and support all the athletes because sports in Kuwait is neglected.

It looks like you’re right. Ahmad Al-Sarraf congratulated Fay for being the first Kuwaiti female at the Olympics. Now that’s weird and isn’t fair.

You probably watched every Olympics coz you’re a guy and so you’re naturally interested in sports. I was talking about me and my female buddies and family members. Our main interest this year is due to London and the fact that we were banned till a short while ago.

I’m not into sports much, and didn’t even post about us at the Olympics yet. I did post about the Saudi girls because that is historical, and about Bahrain bcoz I loved their traditional dagla and thoub :)

Faye is gorgeous and that definitely has something to do with it. She is tall and looks like a model. She seems to have a great personality. I’m not saying its right that she is getting more attention but that is usually how it works. If I was a Kuwaiti brand I would jump to sponser her. (Olympic athlete, beauty & personality = advertising win win) All Kuwaiti Olympic athletes deserve recognition because they are already winners just for qualifying. :)

Great post His & Hers! I agree that all the athletes deserve EQUAL recognition as I am sure they have ALL worked so hard to get there & represent beautiful Kuwait in an event of such magnitude. Kudos to all, God bless, and may they come back with medals– or at least with huge smiles on their faces knowing they tried their best and were able to be a part of this historic event. They are all winners in the end :)
